Zambia’s Minister for Information and Media, Hon. Chushi Kasanda, is advocating for better media services and the provision of accurate information to Africans. Speaking at the Africa Media Convention (AMC) held in Zambia, the Minister emphasized the importance of empowering African citizens with reliable and factual information to actively participate in the affairs of their countries and the continent at large.
During her speech, Hon. Kasanda stated, “Africa deserves better services from the media. Indeed, the people of Africa deserve accurate and factual information to empower them to participate in the affairs of their countries and the continent at large.”
The AMC brought together over 300 African editors, journalists, and media stakeholders to discuss the safety and freedom of women journalists and create an inclusive environment for them.
Reiterating the importance of media freedom and editorial independence, Hon. Kasanda highlighted the significant efforts being made by Zambia to promote media freedom. She also noted the progress being made in enacting media access to information.
“DiplomaticWatch” gathered that the AMC provided a platform for journalists and publishers to engage in meaningful discussions on press freedom, media rights, and the regulatory environment across Africa.
Jane Godia, the Deputy Executive Director of Women in News, participated in the convention as a member of the high-level panel. Addressing the issue of press freedom and gender balance in the media industry, she made important submissions on violence against women.
“Violence and intimidation against women journalists have a serious negative impact on press freedom,” stated Godia, emphasizing the challenges faced by women journalists and calling for collective action to address these issues.
The Africa Media Convention served as an opportunity to engage in discussions on press freedom, media rights, and the regulatory environment in Africa. It underscored the significance of providing accurate and reliable information to empower African citizens and promote an informed and participatory society.
