Pretoria, May 27, 2023 – The Saharawi Republic Embassy in Pretoria proudly participated in the Africa Day Celebrations held today in Midrand, marking the 60th anniversary of the African Union. Ambassador Mohamed Beisat delivered a passionate speech during the commemoration of the late Comrade Ambassador Billy Masetlha in Soweto, where the life and legacy of Ambassador Masetlha were celebrated.

Africa Day, celebrated annually on May 25th, serves as a significant reminder of Africa’s unity and the achievements of the African continent. The Saharawi Republic Embassy took an active part in the festivities, joining their African brothers and sisters in celebrating six decades of the African Union.

Ambassador Mohamed Beisat expressed his pride in participating in the Africa Day Celebrations, highlighting the Saharawi Republic’s commitment to African solidarity and the realization of freedom for the people of Western Sahara. In a tweet from the embassy’s official account, Ambassador Beisat stated, “We are proud to be taking part in the Africa Day Celebrations today in Midrand. We join our African brothers and sisters and celebrate 60 years of the African Union. Sahara Libre, let Freedom come.”

The Saharawi Republic, a member of the African Union since 1982, continues to advocate for the self-determination of Western Sahara and the promotion of human rights in the region. Their participation in the Africa Day Celebrations reflects their dedication to the principles of the African Union and the unity of the African continent.

In addition to the Africa Day festivities, Ambassador Mohamed Beisat also paid tribute to the late Ambassador Billy Masetlha during a memorial held in Soweto. Ambassador Masetlha, a prominent diplomat, played a pivotal role in promoting South Africa’s foreign relations and served as a symbol of the country’s fight against apartheid.

During his speech, Ambassador Beisat praised Ambassador Masetlha’s remarkable contributions to the diplomatic community and emphasized the importance of remembering his legacy. The gathering in Soweto provided an opportunity for dignitaries, diplomats, and community members to honor Ambassador Masetlha’s life and commemorate his dedication to diplomacy and the pursuit of justice.
