Canada has announced enhanced measures for the processing of temporary resident visas (TRV) and more considerate application procedures, aiming to reunite families sooner while their permanent residence applications are being finalized. Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, made the announcement, highlighting the government’s commitment to facilitating family reunification and building inclusive communities.
Under the new process, the majority of these applications will now be processed within 30 days, with applicants benefiting from tailored processing measures that take into account their specific circumstances as spouses and dependents. Minister Fraser emphasized that many applications have already been processed using these new tools, resulting in an impressive approval rate of 93%.
Minister Fraser stated, “Family reunification through immigration is not only a matter of compassion; it is a fundamental pillar of Canadian society. Today’s announcement is a mandate commitment to help build inclusive and resilient communities. We are supporting Canadians and newcomers by reuniting families faster, and also allowing them to work and support themselves more quickly once they’re here. By doing so, Canada is helping newcomers achieve their true potential while also strengthening Canada’s economy and social fabric.”
In addition, spousal applicants and other open work permit holders whose permits expire between August 1 and the end of 2023 will have the opportunity to extend their work permits for an additional 18 months. This extension aligns with a similar option recently provided to individuals with expiring post-graduation work permits.
The implementation of these measures comes shortly after the United Kingdom announced plans to restrict some foreign students from bringing their family members into the country. However, universities across the UK have voiced their opposition to the new policy, emphasizing its potential threat to the country’s global success as a top destination for international talent. They believe that the policy needs to be carefully considered to safeguard the UK’s position in attracting and retaining international students.
Canada’s proactive approach to improving temporary resident visa processing and application measures reflects the country’s commitment to fostering family unity and providing opportunities for newcomers to thrive. These changes not only facilitate the timely reunification of families but also enable newcomers to contribute to Canada’s economy and society more rapidly, promoting a stronger and more inclusive nation.
