July 21, 2023 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Lesotho, marked a significant milestone by launching Lesotho’s First Diaspora Homecoming Event. This momentous occasion sets the stage for the upcoming Homecoming Event scheduled for December 2023.
Hon. Lejone Mpotjoana, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, expressed the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho’s commitment to actively engaging with the diaspora through various established structures and policies. These include the Diaspora Policy, the newly-formed Diaspora Directorate, the Basotho Diaspora Association (BDA), and the National Convention Center (NCC).

Highlighting the vital role of Diaspora Engagement, Hon. Mpotjoana emphasized its significance in contributing to Lesotho’s national development, particularly within the context of the National Strategic Development Plan II (NSDP II). The diaspora’s specialized skills, economic resources, and remittances play a pivotal role in advancing the country’s developmental goals.
Hon. Mokhethi Shelile, the Honourable Minister of Trade, Industry, Small Business, and Tourism, shed light on the diaspora’s influence in promoting investment and tourism. He also shared insights into the array of existing business opportunities and incentives available to the diaspora. During the event, Hon. Shelile referred to the successful diaspora engagement strategies employed by Ethiopia and Ghana, both of whom were esteemed Special Guests and made compelling presentations.
