On September 16, 2025, the Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD), in partnership with the Black Professionals in International Affairs (BPIA), co-hosted the 2025 African Diaspora Day on Capitol Hill. The gathering convened lawmakers, investors, cultural leaders, and innovators to underscore the strategic role of the African diaspora in shaping the institutions that will define the future of U.S.–Africa engagement.

Institutions in a Global Context

The convening came at a moment when institutions worldwide are under strain, from supply chain disruptions to the ethical dilemmas of artificial intelligence. Africa’s role is undeniable: the continent holds 35% of the world’s critical minerals and is home to a rapidly growing consumer and innovation base. At the same time, the diaspora represents a strategic partner. Nearly 15% of Americans trace their lineage to Africa, meaning diaspora identity is already embedded in the U.S. economy and society.

Speakers consistently stressed that the challenge is not lack of opportunity, but how to structure it. Eric Henderson of XCBG International Development Group reminded participants that “you don’t start with investment—you start with what you can buy and sell, and investment follows.” In finance, Eric Guichard, CEO of Homestrings, reframed the conversation: “We don’t have a bankability problem, we have a structuring problem.”

Diaspora Capital and Congressional Action

Finance discussions pointed to the scale of possibility. Bintou Kaboré Zerbo of the Institutional Investor Network noted that global assets under management total more than $105 trillion—redirecting even a fraction toward Africa could be transformative. Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick advanced this idea through her proposed African Diaspora Investment and Development Act (AIDA), which would lower remittance costs, expand diaspora bonds, and strengthen U.S. development finance tools—converting personal remittances into institutionalized development capital.

Congressional leadership further anchored the day. Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan introduced House Resolution 720 to designate September 2025 as African Diaspora Heritage Month. Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson emphasized the shared identity underpinning U.S.–Africa ties: “The water that divides us is not as strong as the blood that unites us.” Together with AIDA, these measures marked a transition from rhetorical recognition to legal architecture.

Beyond Politics: Culture, Technology, and Energy

Panels also reinforced that institutions extend beyond governance into markets and identity. Cultural leaders showcased poetry, film, and music as both economic drivers and instruments of diplomacy, underscoring the creative sector as a serious growth market. In technology, voices like Zekarias Amsalu Dubale (Africa Fintech Summit) and Shonique D. Thomas (Microsoft) emphasized that Africa must be a co-architect of the digital era, with regulatory frameworks and diaspora-led innovation shaping AI and fintech.

On energy, Johns Hopkins’ Mvemba Dizolele was direct: “None of this is going anywhere if there is no electricity.” The message was clear—resource wealth will only create prosperity if paired with transparent governance, regional cooperation, and infrastructure investment.

Looking Ahead

For MIPAD and BPIA, the day reinforced that diaspora networks are not peripheral to international affairs—they are central to the architecture of global business and diplomacy. By embedding diaspora identity and capital into law, by leveraging global assets and cultural industries, and by structuring partnerships in technology and energy, the diaspora is positioned not just to contribute, but to lead.

The 2025 African Diaspora Day showed that the future of U.S.–Africa engagement will be measured not in statements of goodwill, but in institutions built to channel trust, investment, and innovation across borders. The African diaspora stands at the center of this transformation, helping to design the institutions that will shape the century ahead.
