Aberdeen, UK – April 16, 2025 – A diverse group of academics, energy professionals, and students gathered at the University of Aberdeen to take a closer look at Azerbaijan’s evolving energy landscape. Organized by the Azerbaijani Society in partnership with the BA Cultural Center, the event, Navigating the Future: Energy Transition Goals, Technology Innovations, and Challenges in Azerbaijan, sparked meaningful conversations on decarbonization, technology, and policy.

The forum opened with remarks from Ibrahim Khasiyev, President of the Azerbaijani Society, who welcomed guests and laid out the need for open dialogue on how countries like Azerbaijan are redefining their energy priorities.

Speakers brought a wide range of expertise to the discussion. Professor Alexander Kemp and Dr. Alfonso Martinez-Felipe of the University of Aberdeen unpacked technical and economic aspects of transition policies. Fariza Aliyeva, from the energy sector, and Fariz Ismayilzada of ADA University, contributed regional and institutional perspectives, offering data-driven insights into the country’s progress and roadblocks.

Topics ranged from hydrogen integration and decarbonization strategies to technology’s role in long-term renewable planning. Drawing from Aberdeen’s experience with its own energy transformation, speakers identified parallels and differences that could guide Azerbaijan’s shift.

During the Q&A, students and professionals exchanged questions and views on technology adoption and sustainable energy frameworks. Informal conversations continued over coffee and tea, allowing ideas to flow beyond the formal setting.

“The shift toward clean energy brings both disruption and opportunity,” said Dr. Alfonso Martinez-Felipe. “Azerbaijan has the talent, ambition, and resources. By looking outward and building strong research networks, it can lead within its region.”

Billura Bernard, founder and chairman of the BA Cultural Center, reflected on the event’s turnout and energy. “We saw a real hunger for knowledge and collaboration. That’s where progress begins.”

The event left participants with new perspectives on Azerbaijan’s role in the global energy transition—and how institutions like the University of Aberdeen help shape that conversation.
