On September 21, 2024, Armenia marked its 33rd Independence Day, commemorating over three decades since the nation voted to break away from the Soviet Union. The anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on the country’s progress and ongoing challenges.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed the nation, recalling the 1991 referendum where 95% of voters chose independence. He stressed that independence is not a one-time decision but a daily commitment made by citizens through their actions and dedication to the nation.
Pashinyan outlined the government’s efforts to bolster Armenia’s independence by promoting democracy and maintaining a balanced foreign policy. While acknowledging past missteps, he pointed to the “Real Armenia” strategy as a roadmap to sustainable statehood.
The Prime Minister likened everyday actions to an ongoing “referendum” on independence. He described paying taxes, working diligently, and upholding the law as a “Yes” vote for independence, while corruption and lawlessness represent a “No.”
Since 1991, Armenia has faced numerous challenges, including wars, economic difficulties, and political crises. Despite these hurdles, the country has stayed on a democratic path, striving for stability and prosperity.
Yerevan, the capital, hosted celebrations, with over 1.1 million people taking part. Other major cities, including Gyumri and Vanadzor, also joined in the festivities.
Armenia’s geopolitical position remains challenging, bordered by Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey. The country continues to navigate regional tensions while strengthening its international standing.
The Embassy of Armenia to the United States joined in the celebrations, with Ambassador Lilit Makunts sharing a message on social media. She wrote, “We’ve regained our independence and we don’t take it for granted. May we always be grateful for the freedom we have and may the pride of being independent bring joy to our nation.”

Looking ahead, Armenia’s priorities include economic development, especially in sectors like copper and gold mining, alongside preserving its cultural heritage. The government is focused on creating opportunities for its citizens, the majority of whom are ethnic Armenians.
