The African Union has formally accredited Constância Adelina Gaspar as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the African Union Mission to the United States, marking the start of her mandate in Washington, D.C. The presentation of her Letters of Credence took place on Monday during an official ceremony at the White House, where she was received by Donald Trump, President of the United States.

The ceremony signaled a continuation of the long-standing partnership between the African Union and the United States, a relationship that has evolved over nearly two decades and spans cooperation on peace and security, economic engagement, and institutional development. President Trump welcomed Ambassador Gaspar’s accreditation, describing it as a reflection of the enduring nature of AU–U.S. relations and shared interests in stability and sovereign leadership across the African continent.

Ambassador Gaspar’s appointment brings to Washington a diplomat with deep institutional experience and a strong legal background. A jurist by training, she has spent more than fifteen years working within multilateral systems, with a career focused on public international law, governance, and treaty matters. Prior to her current posting, she served in senior legal and advisory roles within the African Union and held leadership responsibilities at the AU Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations in New York, where she was involved in coordinating legal and policy engagement at the global level.

Her selection is widely viewed as a strategic move by the African Union Commission to reinforce its diplomatic presence in the United States at a time of shifting global dynamics. The AU Mission in Washington plays a central role in advancing dialogue with U.S. institutions, Congress, development agencies, and the private sector, particularly on issues tied to continental integration, economic opportunity, and conflict prevention.

Ambassador Gaspar’s mandate is expected to place emphasis on structured engagement and consistent policy coordination, building on the foundation of AU–U.S. cooperation that has supported peacekeeping initiatives, governance reforms, and development partnerships across Africa. Her legal expertise and familiarity with multilateral processes position her to navigate complex policy environments while advancing the African Union’s collective priorities.

The presentation of Letters of Credence formally confirms Ambassador Gaspar as the African Union’s chief diplomatic representative in the United States, opening a new chapter in the Mission’s work in Washington and reaffirming the commitment of both partners to sustained collaboration in the years ahead.
