During a recent courtesy call to the Embassy of Cameroon in Washington, D.C., on the invitation of His Excellency, Henri Etoundi Essomba , the Ambassador of Cameroon to the United States, Diplomatic Watch asked him to reflect on his journey into diplomacy and to offer guidance to young people who hope to follow the same road.

The Ambassador acknowledged that such a question is not easy to answer, but he spoke openly about what shaped his own career. He explained that anyone who wishes to enter the diplomatic corps must begin with a true desire for the work, because the process takes time and demands consistency. Without that drive, the challenges along the way can be overwhelming.

He added that academic preparation is essential. In his words, no one can reach this goal without building a strong educational profile. He pointed out that the profession is no longer limited to a narrow group of fields as it once was. Today, diplomats may have backgrounds in science, law, economics, or environmental studies. This broader range reflects how diplomacy engages with the many dimensions of modern life.

Alongside education, he placed patience and openness at the center of his advice. A diplomat must be willing to wait, to listen, and to make the effort to understand the world around them. He described diplomacy as a field that requires curiosity about others and the ability to learn from every interaction.

For the younger generation, his reflections combine realism and encouragement. The journey is long, the requirements are demanding, but those who prepare with patience and conviction can represent their country on the world stage while building bridges across societies.
