On August 26, 2023, Egypt and Russia joyfully commemorate the 80th anniversary of forging their diplomatic ties. Over the years, they have closely collaborated in various domains such as politics, security, trade, and culture.

Their partnership originated during the early 1940s when both nations united against Nazi Germany in World War II. Diplomatic relations were established in 1943, and the connection has endured since.

Beyond the Cold War era, the two nations have persistently worked together. In 2015, Egypt engaged Russia to construct a nuclear power plant in El Dabaa. Military cooperation has also been a facet, with Russia furnishing Egypt with military resources and training.

Notably, economic bonds run deep as well. In 2022, bilateral trade reached $6.3 billion. Russia plays a key role as Egypt’s primary wheat provider, while Egypt stands as a significant market for Russian arms and tourism.

This 80th diplomatic anniversary showcases the robustness and resilience of their affiliation. Despite challenges, both countries have consistently pursued collaborative avenues.

As they look ahead, they are unwavering in their commitment to fortify their rapport. Joint ventures, including the enhancement of the Suez Canal and a new gas pipeline, underscore their shared aspirations. Collaboratively addressing regional concerns, such as counterterrorism and Middle Eastern stability, remains paramount.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, asserts that their bond is both “strategic and multifaceted,” underlining their dedication to bolstering cooperation across all sectors. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov echoes this sentiment, emphasizing their relationship’s foundation in “mutual respect and trust,” as they tackle global and regional challenges together.

This 80th anniversary stands as a momentous occasion, underscoring their enduring and intimate relationship, and epitomizing their commitment to cooperation and amity.
