Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has officially launched a new political party in the United States, fulfilling a recent promise following President Donald Trump’s signing of the controversial budget legislation dubbed the “One Big, Beautiful Bill.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Musk announced the creation of the “America Party”, a movement he says is aimed at restoring individual freedoms and challenging what he referred to as the country’s “one-party system.”
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party—and you shall have it!” Musk declared, referencing a poll he conducted on Independence Day, which garnered over 1.2 million responses. The poll asked Americans whether they wanted independence from the long-standing two-party system.
Musk has criticized the bipartisan support behind the budget bill, warning that it would deepen national debt and “bankrupt” the country. In his Saturday post, he argued that “when it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.”
Fallout with Trump
The announcement comes amid escalating tensions between Musk and Trump. Once a major financial backer of Trump’s 2024 campaign, Musk also led the Department of Government Efficiency during Trump’s second term, with a mandate to reduce federal spending.
Their alliance soured after Trump signed the budget legislation, which fiscal experts estimate could add $3.4 trillion to the U.S. deficit over the next decade. Musk had previously vowed to oppose any lawmakers who supported the bill, stating:
“They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”
Trump, for his part, has threatened to cut federal subsidies to Musk’s companies—Tesla and SpaceX—and even suggested he may consider deporting Musk, who became a U.S. citizen in 2002.
“We’ll have to take a look,” Trump said when asked about the possibility earlier this week.
Political Strategy and Challenges Ahead
It remains unclear how much traction the America Party will gain ahead of the 2026 midterm elections or the 2028 presidential race. However, Musk has begun outlining a strategy, suggesting the party could focus its resources on a few high-impact Congressional seats.
“One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” he posted.
Every two years, all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and roughly one-third of the Senate are up for election.
Despite Musk’s significant financial resources and social media influence, breaking the Republican-Democrat stronghold is a formidable task. The two-party system has dominated American politics for over 160 years. Trump’s approval ratings in his second term have remained relatively stable, consistently polling above 40%, despite his polarizing policies.
There has been no official response from Trump or the White House regarding Musk’s announcement.
