The new European Union (EU) Ambassador to Samoa, Barbara Plinkert, presented her credentials to the Member of the Council of Deputies, Afioga Le Mamea Tuiletufuga Ropati Mualia, on Thursday, 2023.
Ambassador Plinkert reiterated the EU’s close partnership with Samoa, which is based on shared values and interests. She stressed the EU’s desire to further strengthen this partnership and develop cooperation in areas of common interest. She also congratulated Samoa on hosting the signing of the new EU-ACP Agreement on November 15, 2023, calling it a historic milestone for Samoa and all ACP members.
Afioga Le Mamea Tuiletufuga Ropati Mualia acknowledged the EU’s crucial role in helping Samoa achieve its sustainable development goals, citing initiatives that promote economic growth, social progress, and environmental protection. He recognized the signing of the new OACPS-EU Partnership Agreement in November as a monumental achievement for all regions and expressed Samoa’s eagerness to welcome ACP countries and EU members to its shores next month. He also expressed confidence that Ambassador Plinkert’s appointment would yield more opportunities for furthering relations between the EU and Samoa, as well as the Pacific region.
Ambassador Plinkert has an extensive background in international development, having served in various positions with the United Nations and the European Commission. She is currently the EU Ambassador to the Pacific, accredited to 13 Pacific Island Countries with residence in Fiji.
