Growing up in Prestea, a town nestled amidst the vibrant tapestry of the Western Region in Ghana, presented a unique blend of enriching experiences and humbling challenges. As the eldest sibling, I carried a weight of responsibility from an early age, navigating the realities of limited resources and the pervasive presence of poverty. These formative experiences ignited within me a deep well of empathy for those less fortunate and kindled a passion to make a positive impact on the world.
Within my family, my parents and grandparents played pivotal roles in shaping my leadership values. My father, Benjamin Adoo, a respected Mining Engineer, instilled in me a strong work ethic and a steadfast belief in the transformative power of education. His unwavering dedication to his profession and his commitment to community development served as a beacon of inspiration. My mother, Amma Oduraa Adoo, a resilient Chef harboring dreams of professionalism, taught me the importance of perseverance and the relentless pursuit of one’s aspirations. Her belief in my potential fueled my determination to excel and make a meaningful contribution to society.
My grandparents, embodiments of traditional Ghanaian values, emphasized the centrality of community, respect, and humility as essential principles for leadership and a fulfilling life. Your educational training is marked by exceptional achievements. Can you elaborate on some of the key turning points that steered your path?
One key moment was my decision to pursue a career in higher education. Initially, I aspired to join the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta but my career took an unexpected yet purposeful turns. Instead, this led me to the fulfilling path of empowering future generations through education.
Your experience as Interim Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Morris Brown College undoubtedly shaped your leadership perspective. How has this role influenced your approach to leadership?
Morris Brown College provided me with invaluable insights into the challenges and opportunities of leading an institution of higher learning. It reinforced my belief in the transformative power of education and the importance of fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and student success.
My career is marked by highlights that truly reflect my indomitable spirit. Serving as the Interim Provost and being exclusively selected into the HBCU Faculty Fellows Academy by Propel, along with receiving the US Presidential Lifetime Achievement award, each accomplishment represents a significant chapter in my story of perseverance and dedication.
However, I’m quick to acknowledge the challenges I’ve faced in my career. For me, these challenges were not stumbling blocks but rather stepping stones that taught me the virtues of humility and resilience, shaping my narrative of growth.
What are your insights on leadership in higher education?
Effective leadership in higher education requires a delicate balance between academic excellence, student success, and institutional sustainability. Leaders must cultivate a dynamic environment that fosters innovation, nurtures talent, and prepares students for the demands of the 21st-century workforce.
As an experienced leader in higher education, what are some of the key challenges and opportunities you see for the future of this field?
Higher education faces a multitude of challenges, including technological advancements, evolving student demographics, and the need to adapt to a rapidly changing world. Amidst these challenges lie significant opportunities to harness technology for personalized learning, foster global connections, and prepare students for the diverse demands of the future. I am optimistic that higher education hinges on the fusion of technology, creativity, vision, theoretical constructs, and entrepreneurship. Therefore, I identify generative AI as a leading force in shaping future trends of education.

I vividly recall the defining moment that transformed my vision and propelled me toward a path of philanthropic endeavor. The COVID-19 pandemic, with its unprecedented global impact, laid bare the deep-rooted inequities and vulnerabilities in our society. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, I witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of educational disruption and financial hardship on students from all walks of life.

I define success as leaving a positive impact on the world, making a difference in the lives of others, and inspiring future generations to pursue their dreams. My advice to aspiring individuals is to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, never give up on their dreams, and always remember that success is a journey, not a destination.
The Adoo Family Foundation is a reflection of my deep-rooted desire to uplift and empower communities. Through the foundation, we’ve implemented various initiatives to support education, healthcare, and economic development, particularly for underserved communities in Georgia and Ghana, my homeland. We’ve provided scholarships to underprivileged students, donated medical supplies to healthcare facilities, and supported entrepreneurship programs to foster economic growth.
Who are some of the mentors who have inspired you throughout your life, and what are some of the key lessons that you’ve learned from them?
I’ve been fortunate to have many mentors throughout my life, each leaving an indelible mark on my personal and professional growth. My parents, my grandparents, and my uncle “Subby,” a legendary swimmer, instilled in me the values of hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence. Beyond my family, I’ve been inspired by global icons like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Bill Gates, and Oprah Winfrey, who demonstrated the power of individual action to create positive change.
My mentors have taught me invaluable lessons about leadership, resilience, and the importance of giving back to the community. They’ve emphasized the power of believing in oneself, even in the face of adversity. They’ve shown me that success is not defined by material possessions or titles but by the impact we make on others.

Championing equity and inclusion for individuals with disabilities is a continuous journey, often met with challenges such as societal stigmas, lack of accessibility, and inadequate resources. Achieving a healthy work-life balance is crucial for my overall well-being and productivity. I prioritize quality time with my family, engage in activities that bring joy and relaxation, and set clear boundaries between work hours and personal time.
I find solace and rejuvenation in simple pleasures, such as playing tennis, engaging in competitive sports, and exploring stimulating content on technology and social media. These activities allow me to unwind, stay connected with the world, and pursue my interests.
