Each August 20, Hungary transforms into a lively hub of activity for St. Stephen’s Day, honoring King Stephen I, the founder of the Hungarian state. This day, also known as Foundation Day or Constitution Day, acknowledges the establishment of the Christian kingdom and the conversion of the Magyar people to Christianity.
In 2024, the festivities began with a flag-raising ceremony at Kossuth Square, situated in front of the Hungarian Parliament Building. This ceremonial event, as shared by President Dr. Tamás Sulyok on his X account, set a patriotic tone for the day’s events. The Hungarian Defense Forces followed with an impressive air parade, featuring military aircraft and aerial maneuvers over the Danube River.
🎆 Today, on August 20th, Hungary celebrates St. Stephen's Day with parades and fireworks, honouring the legacy of King Stephen I, who founded the Hungarian state in 1000 AD.

Throughout the day, Budapest and other cities buzzed with cultural programs. Music and energy filled the air with folk dance performances and concerts, while exhibitions provided a deeper look into Hungary’s history. The Golden Train, a replica created for the 900th anniversary of King Stephen’s death, is on display at Kossuth Lajos Square until August 22.
A central tradition involved blessing the new bread, a ceremony reflecting Hungary’s agricultural heritage. This event took place at Szent György tér in Buda Castle, concluding with a procession to the statue of St. Stephen.
As night fell, a stunning fireworks display over the Danube illuminated the sky, visible from various points across Budapest. The evening included a visual display projected onto the city’s landmarks, adding to the festive atmosphere.
St. Stephen’s Day is a public holiday in Hungary, with businesses and schools closing to allow citizens to fully engage in the events. U.S. Ambassador to Hungary, David Pressman expressed his respect and best wishes to the Hungarian people on this significant day.
