Jakarta, Indonesia – On October 20, 2024, Indonesia, the world’s third-largest democracy, witnessed Prabowo Subianto’s swearing-in as the country’s eighth president since independence. The People’s Representative Council building in Jakarta hosted the inauguration ceremony, drawing thousands of spectators and global dignitaries.

Prabowo Subianto, a 73-year-old former special forces general, took the oath of office from the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, commencing his five-year term. The ceremony merged traditional Indonesian customs with modern political protocol, showcasing the country’s cultural heritage and global influence.

Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the 37-year-old son of outgoing President Joko Widodo, became vice president alongside Prabowo. At 37, Gibran sets a record as Indonesia’s youngest Vice President, injecting youthful energy into the new administration.

The new President faces various challenges, including post-pandemic economic recovery, the impacts of climate change on the archipelagic nation, and complex regional geopolitics. Nonetheless, he leads Southeast Asia’s largest economy, which boasts vast natural resources and a young, dynamic population of 270 million.

International observers praised Indonesia’s maturing democratic processes, noting the smooth power transition. The presence of foreign leaders and diplomats at the ceremony reflected Indonesia’s growing regional and global influence.

As the ceremony concluded, Jakarta erupted in celebration, with citizens across the archipelago watching this historic moment. The peaceful transfer of power showed Indonesia’s commitment to democratic values and set the stage for the next phase of national development.

President Prabowo faces high expectations from the Indonesian people, who are eager for progress in education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. As the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation and a key ASEAN member, Indonesia’s political stability and economic success hold significant regional and global importance.
