Nigeria and Japan have formalized a partnership aimed at deepening relations between them. The partnership agreement is geared towards assisting Nigeria in accelerating entrepreneurial-driven innovation, and boosting economic opportunities, particularly for young entrepreneurs.

The agreement was signed yesterday in Abuja during a high-level meeting hosted by Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.

It marked the official signing of two significant collaborative projects, with the centerpiece being the creation of a startup hub in Abuja. This hub is envisioned as a dynamic ecosystem that will provide Nigerian startups with access to funding, mentorship, and technical assistance. The initiative is designed to nurture homegrown solutions to social and economic challenges, reinforcing Nigeria’s drive toward sustainable growth.

Expressing appreciation during the signing, Senator Bagudu thanked the Japanese Government for its consistent support through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Embassy of Japan. He praised the newly signed projects as being in harmony with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing that they represent a practical step forward in Nigeria’s broader economic diversification strategy.

Representing the Japanese delegation, Mr. Kozaki Hitoshi, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Japan, described the initiative as a groundbreaking development. He revealed that this is the first time the Government of Japan is entering into such a co-financing arrangement with another country.

The fund, which will be jointly financed and managed by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), is set to run for a period of 13 years. He further noted that Nigeria is the first country selected by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to pilot the initiative, highlighting Nigeria’s importance in Japan’s global development and foreign policy agenda.

Also present at the event was the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Emeka Vitalis Obi, who applauded both governments for their foresight. He underscored the strategic value of the partnership, describing it as a landmark moment in the ongoing efforts to strengthen economic cooperation between the two nations.

With these agreements, both Nigeria and Japan have signaled a renewed commitment to joint development efforts, particularly in the areas of innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive economic growth. The projects are expected to pave the way for more robust private-sector engagement and deeper ties between the two countries.
