The recent US Institute of Diplomacy and Human Rights (USIDHR) webinar for Black History Month highlighted Jeannette Matta’s outstanding contributions to human and civil rights. With a unique Afro-Latino perspective, Matta has become a notable figure in humanitarian causes.
Jeannette Matta chairs the Hillsborough County Human Relations Board. Additionally, she engages in the Adult Education Human Trafficking Committee of the Hillsborough County Public School Board and contributes to the Community Engagement Committee of the Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa, Florida.
Moderator Isabelle Vladoiu, Founder of USIDHR, introduced Jeannette Matta to webinar attendees, noting her extensive involvement in human rights advocacy through the Miel y Canela Foundation. She added that as an Afro-Latino, Matta’s heritage deeply influences her work, evident in her dedication to assisting immigrants and families and combatting human trafficking in Florida.
During her speech, Matta expressed gratitude for her training at the USIDHR, highlighting how it equipped her with the skills to drive ongoing change. She emphasized her certifications in Human Rights Consulting and International Business, emphasizing how they empowered her to effectively serve her community.
When asked by Isabelle to share specific initiatives or actions she has undertaken in promoting equality and justice, she stated: “Absolutely! In Florida, where we’re located, there’s a significant community of immigrants facing challenges due to a lack of knowledge about their rights. Our foundation educates immigrants on their rights and assists them in navigating the legal processes for legalization. We’ve achieved a 100% success rate with those who’ve taken our courses, empowering them to advocate in their communities.”
Matta further provided insight into the initiatives of the Miel Y Canela Foundation, including educational programs and legal assistance for immigrants in Florida.

Ms. Matta’s educational background includes a Bachelor’s in Business Administration/Public Policy and a master’s in Social Justice/Public Administration. Notably, she speaks multiple languages, further enhancing her ability to connect with diverse communities.
