A delegation of the Federal Government of Nigeria is set to meet with officials of Teesside University in the United Kingdom to address the alleged deportation order issued to some Nigerian students in the middle of their studies at the institution.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) in a statement signed by its Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said some Nigerian students staged a protest on May 22 following the directive by the university authorities to leave the UK due to allegations that some of them had defaulted on their school fees.
The statement said the decision was reached when the NIDCOM Chairperson, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, met with some of the affected students virtually last Sunday. They agreed that a representative of the Nigerian High Commission in the UK, Ambassador Christian Okeke, would lead a delegation to meet with the university’s management to seek an amicable resolution to the issue.
During the meeting, Abike Dabiri-Erewa appealed to the students to remain calm and not take the law into their own hands, while also appealing to the university to treat them fairly.
