One of Nigeria’s federating states, the oil and gas-rich Abia State, is eager to deepen ties with Indonesia, seeking collaboration in various sectors to fuel its local economic development.
The governor of the state, Alex Otti, who was sworn in some months ago after winning the 2023 governorship election, met with the Indonesian Ambassador, Dr. Usra Hendra Harahap, on Thursday, expressing keen interest in foreign partnerships to unlock Abia’s potential.
The governor highlighted plans for a joint venture between the government and private sector to build a new seaport in Ukwa East Local Government Area.
This strategic location near oil and gas deposits in Ukwa-West presents an exciting opportunity for trade and industry. Governor Otti invited Indonesian expertise and companies to participate in this venture, emphasizing Abia’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for investors.
Beyond infrastructure, Governor Otti emphasized Abia’s desire to collaborate with Indonesia in diverse areas like education, agriculture, healthcare, small and medium businesses, entrepreneurship, and technology.
He acknowledged Indonesia’s scholarship opportunities for Abia students, praising these initiatives as crucial for building human capital and fostering future cooperation.
Ambassador Harahap reciprocated, expressing Indonesia’s deep interest in forging meaningful partnerships with Abia.
He identified key sectors like trade, investment, agriculture, education, technology, construction, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals as fertile ground for collaboration. He envisioned this partnership unlocking shared prosperity and creating opportunities for both nations.
