Pakistan gained independence on August 14, 1947, after the partition of British India, ending over 200 years of British rule. The Pakistan Movement, led by the All-India Muslim League under Muhammad Ali Jinnah, sought to establish a separate Muslim state in the northwestern regions of British India. This goal was realized through the Indian Independence Act of 1947, which led to the creation of Pakistan, initially comprising West Pakistan (present-day Pakistan) and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).

Independence Day, or Yaum-i Āzādī, is observed annually on August 14 as a national holiday in Pakistan. The main ceremony takes place in Islamabad, where the national flag is raised at the Presidential and Parliament buildings, followed by the national anthem and speeches from leaders. Across the country, parades, cultural events, and citizens displaying the national flag mark the occasion. In 2024, Pakistan will observe its 78th Independence Day, and the Pakistani community in Los Angeles County will also participate, marking the first official recognition of Pakistan Independence Day by the county’s Board of Supervisors. The Pakistani population in LA County has grown by 45% since 2010, now exceeding 11,000 residents.

From the struggle for freedom to the dawn of independence, this timeline captures the monumental journey and critical milestones that led to the birth of Pakistan.

On this occasion, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan, extended his heartfelt congratulations to all citizens. He reflected on the sacrifices of the founding fathers who envisioned an independent and sovereign state, free from colonial rule. Each generation draws inspiration from their vision, and every year, the nation renews its faith in the idea of Pakistan, recommitting to serve the country with dedication. The theme for this year’s observance, “Azm-e-Istehkam: Resolve for Growth & Stability,” reflects the national commitment to grow and prosper as a progressive state.

Despite numerous challenges, Pakistanis have demonstrated resilience and strength. The nation remains united against terror, extremism, and division, with a collective focus on building a peaceful, tolerant, and progressive society. Senator Dar also acknowledged the contributions of overseas Pakistanis, whose hearts remain with Pakistan regardless of where they are. He reassured that the Government of Pakistan and its Missions abroad will continue to support them and their families.

The Minister also expressed solidarity with the people of Palestine and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK), recognizing their struggles under colonial occupation. Pakistan continues to support their right to self-determination and remains a voice for oppressed people on the international stage. The nation’s foreign policy is guided by the values and principles of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

In line with the national observance, the Embassy of Pakistan in Mexico hosted an event attended by 70-80 Pakistani community members, as well as guests from the local foreign office and Mexican business circles. The day’s activities included a flag-hoisting ceremony, a speech by the Ambassador of Pakistan reflecting on the historical significance of Independence Day, and discussions on the challenges and achievements of Pakistan. Visual presentations showcased Pakistan’s history, natural beauty, and progress, which resonated with the Mexican dignitaries in attendance.

The cultural atmosphere of the event was enhanced by traditional Pakistani cuisine, offering an authentic experience of Pakistan’s culinary diversity. The observance concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, bringing together the Pakistani community in Mexico. The event successfully strengthened ties within the community and promoted Pakistan’s positive image in Mexico, demonstrating the Embassy’s commitment to deepening diplomatic relations and sharing Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage.

Similar observances took place globally, with the Pakistani Consulate General in Chicago leading the Independence Day parade on Devon Avenue. Consul General Tariq Karim congratulated the community, recalled the principles of Quaid-i-Azam, and urged renewed commitment to Pakistan. In Cambodia, the Embassy organized a Badminton Tournament as part of the Independence Day festivities, which saw enthusiastic participation from 42 teams, with H.E. Mr. Vath Chamroen, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports, serving as the chief guest.

Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day reflects the enduring spirit of its people and their commitment to progress, unity, and the values that have shaped the nation since its inception.
