Acting Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, John Rosso, conveyed the interest in closer bonds during a meeting with the Vietnamese Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Nguyen Van Thoai, in Port Moresby on August 25, 2023.
Rosso affirmed Papua New Guinea’s commitment to “expand and strengthen” links with Vietnam, anticipating active engagement with the Vietnamese government to pinpoint novel avenues of collaboration.
Ambassador Thoai warmly embraced Rosso’s sentiments, underscoring Vietnam’s keenness to “strengthen ties with Papua New Guinea” and emphasizing the substantial potential for partnership between both nations. He expressed confidence in their ability to achieve significant milestones together.
The discussions encompassed multiple collaborative realms such as trade, investment, education, tourism, and agriculture. The agreement to host a joint economic and trade committee meeting in the near future further solidified their commitment.
Papua New Guinea and Vietnam established diplomatic ties in 1976 and have a rich history of cooperation, also sharing membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
