As part of Peru’s diplomatic trip in Asia, Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer wrapped up a high-level visit to Singapore on August 12, strengthening the two countries’ strong partnership. In keeping with President Dina Boluarte’s previous state visits to Japan and Indonesia, Schialer’s Singapore tour demonstrated a dedication to strengthening diversified collaboration in the areas of connectivity, business, and regional engagement.
Upon being greeted by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in Singapore’s Istana Palace, the Peruvian foreign minister expressed Peru’s goal to act as a vibrant regional center that links Southeast Asia and South America. The two presidents emphasized how they both want to strengthen their political and economic ties to connect their two continents and expand international trade networks.
One of the highlights of the day was co-chairing the third round of the Political-Diplomatic Consultations Mechanism with Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, which marked the 45th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic ties and reaffirmed shared priorities in trade expansion, investment diversification, and institutional collaboration.
Schialer’s agenda was equally impressive when he met with Minister Grace Fu, Singapore’s authority overseeing sustainability and trade, where they emphasized environmentally responsible commerce paths as a cornerstone of future cooperation.
Minister Schialer also invited Singaporean businesses to invest in Peru’s developing infrastructure and logistics projects while on the trip, highlighting the country’s commercial strengths, especially in mining, agribusiness, and fisheries. This initiative is in line with Lima’s plan to become a major Asia-Pacific logistics center.
The announcement of a new policy by Peru aims to facilitate commercial ties by granting Singaporean residents visa waivers for business travel. This policy will facilitate access for entrepreneurs and foster deeper economic and interpersonal relationships.
A new collaboration agreement between the Singapore collaboration Enterprise and Peru’s Agency for International Cooperation (APCI) was also a result of the visit. This agreement establishes the framework for upcoming inter-institutional cooperation in fields of shared interest, such as economic innovation, sustainability, and development.
The trip was significant because it accelerated efforts to form a strategic partnership between Singapore’s Meat Traders Association and Peruvian meat industry bodies, the Poultry Association of Peru and the Pork Producers Association of Peru. Peruvian beef products can now be exported to Singapore in greater quantities thanks to a memorandum of understanding, which opens up new markets and commercial prospects.
Peru’s function as an ASEAN Development Partner was again emphasized by Minister Schialer. As Peru starts the process of joining the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA), a crucial step toward more digital trade and policy alignment, he warmly appreciated Singapore’s support and announced plans for a joint program including ASEAN member nations.
Schialer’s visit to Singapore marked the conclusion of a successful Asian tour that included stops in Japan and Indonesia. This strategic shift toward Asia was motivated by increased multilateral integration, economic diversification, and diplomatic engagement.
