Pres. Azali Assoumani of the Union of Comoros was welcomed today at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, a former Chadian minister of foreign affairs and previous chairman of the Security Council, welcomed the current AU chairperson.

According to a statement from H.E. Mahamat, “President Assoumani was in the AU on a working session.”

He is expected to lead discussions on matters pertaining to Africa, such as the dire situation in Sudan, where protracted fighting has left a humanitarian crisis in its wake.

Pres. Assoumani became the Chairperson of the AU on Saturday, February 18, 2023, during the official opening of the Thirty-Sixth Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Union, held at the AU Headquarters.

He succeeded H.E. Macky Sall, the President of the Republic of Senegal.
