Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his readiness on Friday to hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, suggesting that a meeting between the two leaders would be beneficial to address matters like the Ukraine war and energy prices.
However, Putin noted to a Russian TV reporter that negotiations with Ukraine are complicated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s decree, which prohibits him from engaging in direct talks with Putin.
Putin praised Trump as a shrewd and pragmatic leader, despite the U.S. president’s recent threats to impose new sanctions and tariffs on Russia if it fails to negotiate a resolution to the conflict. Putin also expressed confidence that Trump would avoid sanction decisions that could harm the U.S. economy.
“Given the current realities, it would likely be best for us to meet and have a calm discussion on all issues of mutual interest to both the United States and Russia. We are prepared for this. However, I reiterate, this ultimately depends on the decisions and actions of the current U.S. administration,” Putin stated.
