Samoa welcomes Chile’s new Ambassador, Hugo Ignacio Llanos

The Independent State of Samoa welcomed the newly appointed Ambassador of Chile, H.E. Mr. Hugo Ignacio Llanos, at a ceremony today, May 17, 2023. The event, held at the Residence of the Head of State in Vailele, marked an important milestone in the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Ambassador Llanos presented his Letter of Credence to the Head of State, Afioga Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II, officially accrediting him to Samoa. He will be based in Wellington, New Zealand while representing Chile’s interests in Samoa.

H.E. Mr. Llanos has extensive diplomatic experience, having served in distinguished roles. He previously held the position of Ambassador to Iran from 2018 to 2020 and served as the Political Coordinator of Chile in the United Nations Security Council from 2014 to 2015. He has also held positions in the United Kingdom, the United Nations, the Netherlands, and International Organizations in Geneva. Additionally, he has served in various senior positions within Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Academically accomplished, H.E. Mr. Hugo Ignacio Llanos holds a Ph.D. in International Law from the Graduate Institute of International Studies at the University of Geneva. He also graduated in Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, further establishing his expertise in the field. He is married to Mrs. Pauline Echeverria, and they have three children.

Samoa and Chile have shared diplomatic ties since 1978, focusing on mutual respect and collaboration. The Head of State and Ambassador Llanos emphasized continued cooperation, particularly within the United Nations framework. They highlighted key areas of shared interest, such as democracy, international law, peace and security, human rights promotion, and sustainable development.

Chile’s recent partnership with the Pacific Islands Forum has increased its interest in the region’s priority issues, such as climate change and ocean protection. Chile is committed to working closely with Pacific island nations to address these challenges and seek effective solutions.

Samoa and Chile are embarking on a new chapter of cooperation, looking forward to advancing shared objectives and promoting mutual understanding between their peoples. The presentation of credentials marks the beginning of an exciting journey, fostering diplomatic exchanges and a brighter future for both nations.
