Singapore’s National Day on August 9 honors the country’s independence from Malaysia in 1965. This holiday brings citizens together to celebrate their sovereignty. The event’s history goes back to Singapore’s brief union with Malaysia, Sarawak, and Sabah in 1963, which aimed to improve Singapore’s economy. But political conflicts led to Singapore’s separation and independence just two years later.

The 2024 National Day Parade at the Padang marked 59 years of independence and 40 years of Total Defence. Even with rain, 27,000 people came to the civic district. Some had to move because of the weather, but the event went on as planned. The celebration had many performances and displays, including the “Red Lions” skydiving team near Marina Bay.

The Total Defence 40 (TD40) Dynamic Defence Display showed off the skills of Singapore’s Armed Forces, Police Force, and Civil Defence Force, showing the country’s dedication to security and strength.

National Day usually has a big parade at places like Marina Bay, the National Stadium, or the Padang. The Armed Forces, Police Force, Civil Defense Force, and political parties all take part. The Prime Minister gives a speech about national and world issues, the economy, and future plans. The day ends with fireworks, choirs singing, and school bands playing.

This year, Singapore singer Benjamin Kheng sang the theme song “Not Alone.” The parade finished with a mix of old National Day songs by local artists and fireworks.

Food is a big part of the celebrations. Restaurants make special National Day menus with local favorites like Chilli Mud Crab and Nasi Lemak Sandwich. People could watch the fireworks from the SkyPark Observation Deck for a great view.

To include more people, National Day events also happened in five other areas on August 10. These places have activities, displays, and more fireworks, helping everyone feel part of the celebration.
