The Black Professionals in International Affairs (BPIA) marked its 35th anniversary with a remarkable evening of celebration and reflection at the Residence of the Swiss Ambassador in Washington D.C. on Friday, June 7, 2024. The event, held under the patronage of His Excellency Jacques Pitteloud, Ambassador of Switzerland to the United States and sponsorship of HP Inc., brought together a diverse array of voices united for change in international affairs from both the Public and Private Sectors.
Alexandria Maloney, the current President of BPIA and Mistress of Ceremonies, commenced the program with welcoming remarks, setting an energetic tone. She acknowledged the special guests, dignitaries, and partners whose support has been instrumental in BPIA’s journey. Next, she invited the Swiss Ambassador to the podium for his address.

Ambassador Pitteloud shared his insights on the evolving landscape of diplomacy and international affairs. He championed the importance of diversity and inclusivity, stating, “I have consistently strived to assemble the best teams… one needs to cast a wide net to empower the leaders of today and tomorrow.” He further claimed that diversity is not just the right thing to do but essential for effectiveness: “For me, this includes having a rich tapestry of perspectives to best sustain our organization’s ability to function in an increasingly diverse world.”

Ambassador Brian A. Nichols, Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, US Department of State, followed with his inspiring speech. He underlined the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in shaping foreign policy initiatives. He accentuated, “Understanding that lifting all communities strengthens our nations, making them more prosperous, stable, and equitable.”

Additionally, Ambassador Nichols expressed that a diverse workforce strengthens the nation’s foreign affairs efforts. “We, as a nation, benefit from this diversity. By bringing together the skills of the American people, we become more competitive, more powerful. Advancing racial and ethnic equity is not just the right thing to do; it makes us a stronger partner for our allies and secures greater security, peace, and prosperity for the region.”
Jonathan Finer, Assistant to the President and Principal Deputy National Security Advisor, echoed similar sentiments during his presentation. He equally stressed the need for diverse voices to craft effective policies. “A diversity of voices is critical to generate better policies and outcomes for our country,” he said.

Dr. Stacey A. Dixon, Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence (PDDNI), praised the deep ties between the United States and Switzerland, reflecting their shared commitment to freedom and opportunity. “Today, we celebrate these ties alongside BPIA’s 35-year journey and the impact it has made on public service and diplomacy,” she remarked.

In her acceptance speech, Chidi Blyden, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, reflected on the importance of authenticity, stating, “My background, expertise, and life experiences have allowed me to speak with credibility on certain issues.” She acknowledged the challenges faced by Black professionals, but also the unique value they bring: “I have experienced discrimination, but my culture and heritage have also given me access to enter spaces and develop solutions that others cannot.”

Brittany Masalosalo, Chief Public Policy Officer at HP Inc., spoke about her passion for international affairs, both in government and the private sector. She highlighted the value of international affairs for businesses, stating, “In today’s dynamic world, it’s more important than ever for companies to understand foreign policy.” Masalosalo pointed out the need for diversity in the field: “I am proud to be a Black woman in this role, but too often, I am the only one in the room. Embracing diversity is not just an option, it’s a mandate for our society.”

In her closing remarks, Alexandria Maloney expressed gratitude to all who had contributed to the success of the event. She reaffirmed BPIA’s commitment to building inclusivity and empowerment within the field of international affairs, ensuring that voices from all backgrounds are heard and valued.
