Mongolia, August 2– In a historic first, Swiss President Viola Amherd visited Mongolia to commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations and sign a cooperation agreement with President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh.

On Friday, President Amherd and President Khurelsukh signed a joint declaration on future cooperation, the first visit by a Swiss president to Mongolia. Defence Minister Amherd traveled to Ulaanbaatar to honor the milestone anniversary, as announced by the defense ministry.

A memorandum of understanding aimed at bolstering democratic institutions in Mongolia was also signed during the visit. The meeting reviewed successes over the past six decades and set the stage for future collaborations.

Although the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) will conclude its operations in Mongolia after 20 years, Switzerland will maintain some activities through its embassy in Beijing. This ensures continued support for Mongolia’s democratic growth and development.

Discussions covered the security situation in East Asia and Europe. President Amherd reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. The president’s program included meetings with Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene and Speaker of Parliament Dashzegviin Amarbaysgalan.

From Mongolia, President Amherd will travel to Japan, where she will meet with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Emperor Naruhito.
