United States and Sri Lanka celebrate 75 years of partnership

United States Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, hosted an event in Colombo on June 22 to commemorate the 247th anniversary of America’s Declaration of Independence. The event also marked the 75th anniversary of the strong partnership between the United States and Sri Lanka. Foreign Minister Ali Sabry attended the celebration as the Chief Guest.

During the event, Ambassador Chung emphasized the significance of freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as the driving forces behind a nation’s development. She highlighted the shared values and collaboration between the United States and Sri Lanka, stating that both countries can succeed together.

The partnership between the two nations encompasses various areas, including government assistance, cultural preservation, climate change initiatives, and military cooperation. Over the years, the United States has provided substantial support to Sri Lanka through programs such as USAID, the Peace Corps, academic exchanges, and professional training.

Ambassador Chung underscored the importance of people-to-people relationships and expressed optimism for further development in economic, political, and social spheres. She recognized the achievements of the past 75 years and expressed confidence that the friendship, commitment, and support between the United States and Sri Lanka will endure, contributing to a brighter future for both nations.

In her speech, Ambassador Chung referenced American history, acknowledging the country’s imperfections while emphasizing its ongoing pursuit of progress and inclusivity. She also highlighted the significance of Sri Lanka’s own independence anniversary, celebrating the 75 years of bilateral relations between the two countries.

The event concluded with a toast to the next 75 years of partnership between the United States and Sri Lanka, signifying the commitment to continued collaboration and mutual growth.
