Demeke Mekonnen, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia met with the US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Amb. Mike Hammer, at his office in Addis Ababa, to discuss enhancing the longstanding relationship between Ethiopia and the United States and addressing security challenges in the region.
According to a tweet from Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Demeke informed Hammer about the current status of implementing the Pretoria Peace Agreement, and Ethiopia’s determination to complete it. He also requested practical aid to support the government’s reconstruction and rehabilitation programs, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring peace and stability in the region.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister emphasized Ethiopia’s constructive role in the region and its support for the Sudanese people’s efforts to achieve lasting peace.
In addition, the two sides exchanged views on the Horn of Africa’s challenges and the need for collective efforts by the international community to promote peace and prosperity.
The meeting ended with Mike Hammer reaffirming the United States’ commitment to Ethiopia, emphasizing their enduring partnership and continued support for peace and stability. However, he expressed concerns about the region’s growing challenges in the Horn of Africa.
