President Sánchez praised Speaker Nancy Pelosi during his visit. He presented the Grand Cross of the Order of Elizabeth the Catholic to Pelosi, who served as the 52nd Speaker of the House of Representatives. Furthermore, he described her as a woman known for democracy, who has built bridges and stood up for freedom.
Speaker Pelosi made history in 2007 when she became the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House. She also became the first House Speaker and highest-ranking U.S. official to travel to Taiwan in a quarter-century in 2022.
More details about the meeting between the two Presidents are expected to unfold, as previous reports have indicated that they will have extensive talks about the Russia-Ukraine war.
Spain and the United States are strong partners whose long-time friendship has led to development.
President Sánchez thanked Biden for his warm welcome and hospitality, reiterating their commitment to the defense of democracy.
