Minister Zbigniew Rau of Poland has met with the United States Deputy Secretary, Richard R. Verma, to discuss the development of bilateral relations and provide a response to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
According to the spokesperson for Poland Foreign Affairs Ministry, Łukasz Jasina, the highly anticipated gathering was initiated at the behest of Deputy Secretary Verma, highlighting its importance and significance. Notably, the meeting brought together distinguished figures from various key entities, including the Department of State, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the esteemed Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and Environment, Jose W. Fernandez. This impressive lineup of participants underscored the meeting’s relevance and emphasized the diverse expertise and perspectives brought to the table.
The meeting included discussion on how to provide comprehensive assistance to the Ukrainians and a coordinated response against the Russian invasion.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has now been ongoing for over 400 days, resulting in several casualties.
Minister Rau and the US Deputy Secretary were keen on building strong strategic relations.
They highlighted that these relations will assist them in maintaining close cooperation in the field of security.
The joint efforts by Poland and the US will assist both countries in the development of defence policies, energy security and the development of nuclear energy.
The officials noted that the invasion by Russian forces into Ukraine have greater consequences on the international scene and there is need for a transatlantic response to the war.
The Polish Foreign Affairs Minister presented the country’s position in response to the Russian invasion. Minister Rau emphasized the necessity of imposing stricter sanctions on Russia and holding it accountable for the committed crimes.
In light of the various forms of assistance extended to Ukraine to resist the Russian invasion, Minister Rau appealed to additional countries to continue providing aid.
He highlighted the significance of supporting the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the Ukrainian people, along with providing military, economic, and humanitarian aid.
In his words, Minister Rau said, “Poland advocates strong transatlantic relations. Taking steps to strengthen and enhance them will be our priority, also during our presidency of the Council of the European Union. It is also in the vital interest of the United States to remain a European power.”
Meanwhile, the NATO summit is expected to take place in Vilnius in July. The summit will provide clarity on the sanctions to be imposed on Russia.
The Foreign Affairs Minister advocates for a reinforced defense posture within NATO, stressing the significance of a permanent US military presence in Poland. Furthermore, he emphasizes the critical role of NATO’s deterrence capabilities and underscores the imperative of substantial military assistance to Poland. This call for action reflects a firm commitment to enhancing collective security and ensuring the readiness and resilience of NATO member states.
