In a vibrant celebration at the University of Ottawa, the African Diplomatic Corps in Ottawa commemorated Africa Day 2023, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the African Union (AU). The event focused on strengthening economic engagement between Africa and Canada, particularly in the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Highlighting the potential for collaboration and investment, H.E. Adeyinka Asekun, the Deputy Dean of the African Group of Ambassadors and High Commissioner of Nigeria to Canada, urged Canada to deepen its engagement with Africa through AfCFTA. The theme for Africa Day 2023, “Opportunities in Challenging Times,” resonated throughout the event.

AfCFTA, an initiative of the AU, aims to create a single market for goods and services across Africa, fostering economic integration and development. This framework presents significant opportunities for Canada to expand its economic footprint in Africa, tapping into emerging markets and benefiting from increased market access, job creation, and technology transfer.

Collaboration in vital sectors such as agriculture, energy, infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and technology was emphasized during the celebration. Africa’s abundant agricultural resources, renewable energy potential, and infrastructure needs provide avenues for Canada to share expertise, technology, and investment, contributing to Africa’s sustainable development.

The theme, “Opportunities in Challenging Times,” acknowledges the obstacles faced by both Africa and Canada while highlighting the determination to overcome them and harness growth and prosperity. Addressing issues such as trade barriers, infrastructure gaps, and access to finance is crucial to unlock the full potential of AfCFTA and promote inclusive economic growth.

In addition to the economic dimension, the Africa Day celebration fostered cultural exchange and people-to-people connections between Africa and Canada. Diverse cultural displays, traditional music, dance performances, and tantalizing African cuisine showcased the continent’s rich heritage, promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation among Canadians.
