New York – On June 8, Zambia was elected as a member of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the United Nations General Assembly Headquarters in New York. The country secured its seat alongside Kenya, Mauritania, Nigeria, and Senegal, representing Africa. Additionally, twelve other countries were elected to represent different regions across the globe, including Asia-Pacific States, Eastern European States, Latin American and Caribbean States, and Western European and other States.
Zambia received an overwhelming 190 votes out of the 191 valid ballots cast. Dr Chola Milambo, Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, confirmed the election outcome and highlighted that membership in ECOSOC will provide Zambia with an opportunity to address crucial economic issues on the global stage. These issues include economic development, trade, debt and international financial systems, and the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Zambia previously served as a member of ECOSOC from 2011 to 2013 and held the Council’s presidency in 2011 to 2012. ECOSOC plays a vital role within the United Nations by coordinating the organization’s economic and social sectors. It serves as a central forum for discussions on international economic affairs and formulates policy recommendations for member states and the United Nations System.
