Friday, July 7 – Ambassador Henk van der Zwan met with Gloria de Mees, a distinguished lecturer in international law at the Organization of American States (OAS). Notably, De Mees has made history as the first-ever Surinamese commissioner elected to the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights (IACHR). In a parallel landmark achievement, Christopher Bulkan from Guyana has also been elected as a commissioner for the first time.
Underpinning the Dutch human rights policy is a resolute commitment to protecting and promoting human rights globally. By appointing Mrs. Gloria De Mees as a commissioner, Suriname has gained a passionate advocate who has the potential to play a crucial role in advancing human rights within the region. Furthermore, her appointment is expected to kindle a renewed passion for (international) human rights protection among law students in Suriname.
Expressing his unwavering support, Ambassador Van der Zwan conveyed his utmost confidence in Ms. De Mees’ abilities as she assumes her role as Commissioner. The embassy remains dedicated to closely monitoring her endeavors, particularly in their efforts to actively engage Surinamese students and empower them to participate in human rights advocacy.
