The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the United Nations, H.E. Matete ‘Nena, paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Secretary General (DSG) of the United Nations, H.E. Amina Mohammed, on September 6, 2023.
The meeting focused on the overall UN development assistance to Lesotho through its specialized agencies and organs. The two officials discussed the need for advocacy regarding support to Landlocked Developing Countries, Least Developed Countries, and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Stimulus to accelerate progress on their implementation and the 2030 Agenda.
They also touched on geopolitical tensions, universal health coverage, efforts to fight gender-based violence, youth unemployment, food systems transformation, digital infrastructure, energy crises, and the scourge of HIV and AIDS.
The DSG pointed out that the Global Africa Business Initiative can play a pivotal role in confronting these challenges. In response, the Permanent Representative informed the DSG that the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho is also working hard to address some of the challenges the country faces, citing the proposed Water and Hydrogen Conference and Expo, The Accountability Summit, and the Diaspora Homecoming Event, all to be held this year.
