Paramaribo, Suriname – Last week, the Dutch Embassy visited Professor Naipal’s natural coastal protection project and actively participated in planting new mangrove trees. This collaboration highlights the growing importance of restoring mangrove forests to preserve and strengthen Suriname’s coastline.
Mangrove forests play a vital role in protecting Suriname’s shores from erosion and providing a natural barrier against storm surges. Additionally, these trees act as carbon sinks, contributing to the fight against climate change.
The Dutch Embassy’s visit marked a significant step in this ongoing initiative, showcasing the international support for mangrove restoration efforts. Deltares, Boskalis, Conservation International Suriname, and Interconnect are collaborating closely with Professor Naipal to explore innovative methods for mangrove restoration.
These partnerships are funded by Partners for Water of the National Enterprise Netherlands – RVO.
In a parallel development, a Makandra collaboration was launched last Monday between Deltares, Anton De Kom University of Suriname, and the Ministry of Public Works, further emphasizing the importance of natural coastal protection restoration.
