NEW YORK CITY – New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of a gold mine collapse in Suriname that has claimed the lives of at least 14 people, with seven others still missing.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the tragic gold mine collapse in Suriname,” Adams said in a statement. “My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and those who are still searching for their loved ones.”
The collapse occurred on Monday in the Matawai area of Suriname, a remote southern region known for its gold deposits. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, but authorities believe it may have been triggered by heavy rains.

“The gold mining industry is a dangerous one, and it is important that we do everything we can to protect the lives of those who work in it,” he said. “I urge the government of Suriname to take steps to improve safety standards and to crack down on illegal mining.”
The gold mine collapse is the worst mining accident in Suriname’s history. The country has a long history of illegal mining, and the government has struggled to regulate the industry.
“This tragedy is a reminder of the dangers of illegal mining,” Adams said. “I urge those who are considering working in this industry to think twice. It is not worth risking your life.”
