Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen, offered a warm farewell today to the departing Sudanese Ambassador, Jamal El Sheikh, while reiterating Ethiopia’s unwavering support for peace and unity in Sudan.
During their meeting, Mekonnen praised Ambassador El Sheikh’s contributions to strengthening the “brotherly relations” between the two nations, acknowledging the deep historical and cultural ties that bind them. He went on to assure the ambassador that Ethiopia would remain a steadfast partner for the Sudanese people during this challenging period.
Expressing deep concern over the ongoing conflict in Sudan, Mekonnen emphasized the urgent need for a peaceful resolution through a “Sudanese-owned and led” dialogue process. He stressed the importance of preserving Sudan’s territorial integrity and silencing the guns to achieve lasting peace and stability.
Ambassador El Sheikh, visibly touched by the warm send-off, echoed Mekonnen’s sentiments on the importance of dialogue and unity. He expressed his gratitude for Ethiopia’s consistent stance on the conflict, particularly its call for a peaceful solution that upholds Sudan’s territorial integrity. He also commended Ethiopia’s support for Sudanese refugees displaced by the violence.
Concluding the meeting, Mekonnen extended his best wishes to Ambassador El Sheikh for his future endeavors and pledged to continue fostering the close ties between Ethiopia and Sudan.
