Pretoria, South Africa – January 4, 2024: With Sudan’s fragile peace teetering on the brink, President Cyril Ramaphosa reached out to General Mohamed Dagalo, leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), today. In their critical meeting, they grappled with the central roles the African Union, IGAD, and Sudanese actors must play to steer the nation away from political and security turmoil.
President Ramaphosa commended the central role played by the African Union and IGAD, currently led by Djibouti, in facilitating dialogue between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF. He also acknowledged the crucial participation of the Sudanese people and civil society in the quest for a lasting solution.
Expressing South Africa’s unwavering support for the peace process, Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of the upcoming face-to-face talks between General Dagalo and General Burhan, head of the SAF. He reiterated the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire and a sustained dialogue towards a permanent end to hostilities.
