ROME, Italy – Eike Schmidt, the departing director of the renowned Uffizi Gallery, is casting a hopeful eye towards Russia, wishing for a swift thaw in cultural ties between the two nations. In an interview with TASS, Schmidt expressed his deep desire for the resumption of artistic collaboration and exchange, highlighting the importance of preserving cultural bridges even amidst political tensions.
“Let’s hope that this is over soon,” Schmidt said, referring to the current estrangement between Italy and Russia. “I hope that relations between our countries will soon flourish again as it has always been.”
Among his proudest achievements during his eight-year reign at the Uffizi, Schmidt counts the establishment of the Museum of Russian Icons. Unveiled two years ago, this unique space showcases the Medici collection of Russian icons, considered one of the largest and most valuable outside Russia.
“We opened the Museum of Russian Icons at a very special moment in history,” Schmidt explained. He elaborated on how the Uffizi’s ongoing exhibition of self-portraits also features works by Russian artists, further testament to the gallery’s commitment to fostering cultural understanding.
Schmidt’s sentiments resonate with the core mission of the Uffizi Gallery: to preserve and celebrate artistic excellence across cultures and eras. He believes that art transcends borders and political discord, offering a vital space for dialogue and mutual appreciation.
