MUNICH, GERMANY – Vice President Kamala Harris took the stage at the Munich Security Conference on Friday, firmly defending the United States’ role as a global leader amidst questions and criticisms.
Facing an audience potentially harboring doubts fueled by recent political rhetoric, Harris emphasized the “fundamental interest” of the American people in maintaining global leadership. This stance countered unnamed critics, widely understood to be a reference to former President Donald Trump, who have previously questioned international commitments, including the critical NATO alliance.
“There are questions here in Europe and around the world about the future of America’s role,” Harris acknowledged, addressing the elephant in the room. “President Biden and I believe that engaging globally, upholding international norms, and defending democratic values are not just acts of charity, but strategic investments in our own security and prosperity.”
Harris elaborated, highlighting the practical benefits of leadership for the American people. “This role keeps our homeland safe, creates jobs, strengthens supply chains, and opens new markets,” she stated. “Our commitment to alliances has historically made America the most powerful and prosperous nation, and abandoning that path would be foolish.”
