Lesotho has emerged as a vocal advocate for peace at the UN Human Rights Council, actively engaging with stakeholders and hosting events to promote its message.
During Deputy Prime Minister Nthomeng Majara’s visit to Geneva in December 2023, she emphasized the crucial link between human rights and peace. Highlighting the challenges faced by states in achieving sustainable development due to conflict, she called on the Council to “actively promote a culture of peace” to prevent future violations and uphold human rights globally.
Following her visit, Lesotho’s Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva took a proactive role. It not only joined the core group drafting a new Human Rights Council resolution on promoting a culture of peace, but also hosted a side event at the 55th session titled “Strengthening A Culture Of Peace: Time For The Human Rights Council To Take Action.”
The event, co-sponsored by Gambia and Chile, featured discussions between experts and stakeholders on the Council’s role in fostering peace. The resolution itself garnered significant support, aligning with the priorities of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and UNESCO’s recent Recommendation on Education for Peace and Sustainable Development.
