Namibia called on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to declare Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories illegal and urged the international community to take action to end it.
Professor Phoebe Okowa, representing Namibia, argued that Israel’s policies and practices in the occupied territories violate the prohibition of apartheid and the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
Okowa emphasized that Israel’s occupation is illegal under international law and called for the dismantling of settlements and recognition of the Palestinian right to self-determination in an independent state.
She urged the Court to clarify the definition of apartheid and its application to the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
Okowa also called on the United Nations and other states to take concrete steps to end the occupation, including the imposition of sanctions if necessary.
This case is part of an ongoing legal battle between Israel and Palestine, with the ICJ expected to issue an advisory opinion on the legality of Israel’s occupation in the coming months.
