Namibia has condemned the recent sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the United States, calling them “illegal” and urging their immediate removal.
This comes after President Joseph Biden announced a new sanctions regime for Zimbabwe on March 4, 2024. Namibia, along with many other African nations, strongly opposes sanctions imposed without approval from the United Nations Security Council.
“The Namibian government does not recognize unilateral coercive measures,” a statement declared, referencing Article 96 of their constitution, which upholds the principle of non-interference in other countries’ affairs. Namibia believes that constructive dialogue and cooperation are the best ways to address international concerns.
The statement further highlights Zimbabwe’s ongoing efforts towards economic reform, initiatives that Namibia believes deserve international support. Namibia argues that the continued sanctions hinder Zimbabwe’s economic potential and negatively impact the entire Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
This is not the first time Namibia has called for an end to sanctions on Zimbabwe. Namibia, along with the SADC and the African Union, has repeatedly urged the complete and unconditional lifting of these economic and financial penalties.
Namibia has also pledged its full support for Zimbabwe’s reintegration into the global financial system, a move they believe will benefit the entire African continent.
