South African President Cyril Ramaphosa hailed the United Nations Security Council’s resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan.
“This resolution offers a chance for a lasting ceasefire and renewed peace talks,” President Ramaphosa stated. “The ongoing violence must end. We need to pave the way for peace.”
The resolution, passed on March 25th, 2024, calls for a complete halt to fighting throughout the holy month. President Ramaphosa urged the Security Council to ensure both sides comply with the binding resolution.
South Africa expressed deep concern over the devastating human cost of the conflict, with thousands killed, including over 13,000 children, in the past five months.
The resolution also highlights the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid and civilian protection within Gaza. South Africa emphasized the importance of all parties following the Security Council’s demand to lift restrictions on humanitarian assistance deliveries, aligning with international law and previous UN resolutions.
