Moscow, Russia – Russia condemned South Korea’s recent sanctions on individuals and entities linked to Moscow, calling it an “unfriendly step” based on “unsubstantiated accusations.”
South Korean Ambassador Lee Do-hoon was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday and met with Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko. According to a ministry statement, Rudenko criticized the sanctions as being imposed without justification and warned that they could damage bilateral relations.
The move comes after South Korea imposed sanctions on two Russian ships, organizations, and individuals it accuses of aiding North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, potentially violating UN Security Council resolutions.
Russia vehemently denies these accusations and claims its cooperation with North Korea adheres to international law. The Foreign Ministry further urged South Korea to abandon these “counterproductive” actions, arguing they could heighten tensions on the Korean Peninsula and ultimately threaten South Korea’s own security.
