Butner, North Carolina – Russia’s Ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, has accused American authorities of targeting Russians in third countries for arrest and deportation to the U.S. He made the remarks after visiting Roman Seleznyov, a Russian citizen imprisoned in a North Carolina federal prison.
Seleznyov is serving a 27-year sentence for cybercrimes that targeted over 200 American businesses. Antonov said he would request better prison conditions for Seleznyov, citing health concerns. The Ambassador also expressed hope for Seleznyov’s eventual release, possibly through a prisoner exchange between Russia and the United States.
“There is no chance of early release,” Antonov acknowledged, “but there’s an opportunity through existing confidential channels if he is exchanged for any American jailed in Russia.” However, the Ambassador admitted he has no specific details on the possibility of such an exchange.
Antonov did highlight that American authorities have so far allowed Russian diplomats to meet with imprisoned Russians. He also commented on recent statements by the U.S. Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs, Roger Carstens, who indicated upcoming American proposals for a prisoner exchange.
“It’s difficult to predict the current administration’s actions,” Antonov said. “If they do propose such an exchange, it will be carefully examined, and we will respond accordingly.”
