Moscow – Russia is preparing for a handover of power as the current cabinet resigns to make way for a new team following President Vladimir Putin’s re-election.
President Putin, who secured another term during the March 15-17 elections, will be inaugurated on May 7th. As per Russian law, the existing cabinet will step down on the same day, paving the way for the formation of a new government.
The incoming president will hold the authority to appoint the Prime Minister, subject to approval by the State Duma, the lower house of parliament. The same process applies to the appointment of deputy prime ministers and federal ministers.
However, there’s an exception for key positions like Interior, Emergencies, Defense, Foreign Affairs, and Justice ministers. These appointments will require consultations with the Federation Council, the upper house of parliament, before the president makes his final decision.
