The Palestinian Ambassador to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, awarded the prestigious “Shield of Palestine” to Lana Nusseibeh, the Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the UN. This recognition comes in appreciation of Nusseibeh’s unwavering efforts in supporting the Palestinian cause, particularly during the UAE’s recent term on the UN Security Council.
Ambassador Nusseibeh played a pivotal role in securing the passage of critical resolutions addressing the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Working alongside the Palestinian Mission, the Arab Group, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, she helped achieve Resolutions 2712 and 2720, which focused on facilitating the delivery of vital aid. Additionally, the UAE strongly backed the UN General Assembly resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, which received overwhelming support in December 2023.
Nusseibeh’s leadership also extended beyond resolutions. The UAE, under her guidance, organized a crucial visit for Security Council members to the Rafah border crossing in October 2023. This firsthand experience exposed Council members to the immense humanitarian needs within Gaza and the logistical challenges of delivering aid.
Nusseibeh reaffirmed the longstanding and robust relationship between the UAE and Palestine. She underscored the UAE’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Palestinian people, especially in the wake of the devastating Israeli war on Gaza.
The UAE’s dedication to humanitarian assistance remains steadfast. Since the conflict began, the country has provided over $45 million for the Gaza relief effort. This includes nearly 40,000 tonnes of aid delivered by land, air, and sea, with 300 tonnes provided in collaboration with World Central Kitchen. The UAE’s commitment to healthcare extends to two hospitals – a field hospital in southern Gaza treating nearly 14,000 patients and a floating hospital stationed in Al-Arish Port.
